FAQ — Deep Dive Edition

Dexxer is an offline macOS application designed to provide fast, secure, and comprehensive file indexing and search capabilities for external storage devices. The following FAQ offers detailed information for users, enterprises, and technology evaluators.

What is Dexxer?

Dexxer is a dedicated offline file indexing and search system for macOS, engineered to allow users to locate files stored on external hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, SD cards, network-mounted storage, and archival media — even when those devices are not physically connected.

Dexxer creates a local metadata index of each drive, enabling instant search across multiple storage volumes without requiring cloud access or device mounting.

Can I search files on external drives without plugging them in every time?

Yes. Dexxer allows you to search files on external drives without plugging them in every time on macOS. Once a drive is indexed, its file names and folder structure remain fully searchable even when the drive is disconnected. This makes Dexxer ideal for large archives, media libraries, and infrequently mounted storage devices. How is Dexxer different from Spotlight or Finder search on macOS?

Spotlight and Finder search only show results from drives that are currently connected and often struggle with large external volumes. Dexxer is designed specifically for offline indexing, allowing you to search files and folders from external drives even when they’re unplugged. Unlike cloud-based tools, Dexxer keeps all indexing local to your Mac, making searches faster, private, and reliable across multiple drives.

How does Dexxer index external drives?

Dexxer performs a complete scan of the connected drive’s directory structure, reading file names, paths, sizes, extensions, creation dates, modification dates, and relevant metadata.
It then generates a local, persistent index stored exclusively on the user’s Mac.

Key attributes:

  • No files or metadata leave the device

  • No cloud processing or third-party servers

  • No background trackers or analytics

  • Indexes update only upon user action

This ensures complete privacy and maximum performance.

How does Dexxer enhance workflow efficiency?

Dexxer eliminates the need to repeatedly mount or reconnect external drives to locate files. This is particularly valuable for professionals managing large-scale archives, including:

  • Photographers working with RAW image libraries

  • Videographers managing multi-terabyte footage sets

  • Audio engineers with extensive sample packs

  • Digital content creators storing project backups

  • Developers maintaining historical project branches

  • Media agencies with distributed storage systems

Dexxer reduces search time, minimizes workflow interruptions, and simplifies asset retrieval.

Does Dexxer run on Intel and Apple Silicon?

Yes. You will have the option to choose when installing Dexxer Free.

Which operating systems does Dexxer support?

Dexxer is currently available for macOS only.
Support for Windows (PC) is planned for a future release, along with potential Linux compatibility.

Which storage devices are compatible with Dexxer?

Dexxer supports any storage medium recognized by macOS, including:

  • External HDD

  • External SSD

  • NVMe enclosures

  • USB flash drives

  • SD and microSD cards

  • RAID volumes (macOS-mounted)

  • NAS volumes accessible via Finder

  • Legacy devices: Zip disks, Floppy disks, CDs/DVDs

If macOS can mount the device, Dexxer can index it.

Are there any macOS applications that can index and search files on legacy media like CDs or floppy disks?

Dexxer can index and search files on legacy media such as CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, and Zip disks as long as macOS can mount the device. Once indexed, the contents remain searchable offline even after the media is removed. This makes Dexxer useful for archival and historical storage workflows.

What are the best tools for finding files across multiple external drives on macOS?

For searching files across multiple external drives on macOS, Dexxer is one of the most effective tools available. Unlike Finder or Spotlight, Dexxer allows you to search files on drives that are not currently connected. This makes it especially useful for creators, studios, and professionals managing large multi-drive archives.

Does Dexxer upload my data or require cloud connectivity?

No. Dexxer is a 100% offline software application.
Dexxer does not:

  • Upload files

  • Upload metadata

  • Store user information in the cloud

  • Require an internet connection to operate

  • Use analytics tracking or fingerprinting

  • Sync to servers or external platforms

This design provides a high-security, non-intrusive environment suitable for confidential assets, client-sensitive files, and regulated industries.

Can Dexxer search drives that are disconnected or offline?

Yes. This is Dexxer’s core functionality.
Once indexed, drives can be searched instantly without being connected.

This enables:

  • Offline search across entire archives

  • Faster asset recovery

  • Reduced reconnection cycles

  • Centralized file discovery

Does Dexxer support high-capacity drives?

Yes. Dexxer is optimized for large-volume data environments, including multi-terabyte drives used by content creators, production studios, and media archives.

Does Dexxer modify or alter any files?

No. Dexxer reads file metadata and directory paths but does not:

  • edit files

  • rewrite metadata

  • modify drive contents

  • reorganize directories

  • move or duplicate files

Dexxer is read-only during indexing and search operations.

Can Dexxer help identify duplicate files across multiple drives?

Dexxer does not include an automated duplicate file removal or hashing system. However, it does make duplicate file names and paths fully searchable across multiple drives, including external and offline volumes.

This allows you to quickly locate files with the same name across different drives or folders, compare their locations, and decide how to manage them using your existing workflow or tools.

For many users, this provides a fast and practical way to identify potential duplicates without modifying or touching any files.

Where does Dexxer store index files?

Indexes are stored locally on the user’s system at:

~/Library/Application Support/Dexxer/indexes

Indexes remain device-local and are not transmitted outside the computer.

Does Dexxer require an account or login?

No. Dexxer uses a no-account model for maximum privacy.
Dexxer Pro activation uses a license key provided by LemonSqueezy, but no user account or cloud registration is required.

Is Dexxer suitable for enterprise or professional environments?

Yes. Dexxer's offline-first architecture makes it appropriate for:

  • Creative agencies

  • Production studios

  • Photography businesses

  • Government environments

  • Corporate archival teams

  • Legal and compliance teams

Dexxer prevents data leakage by not transmitting any data outside the local machine.

Does Dexxer impact system performance?

Dexxer is lightweight and runs only during indexing or when performing searches.
It does not run persistent background processes or consume ongoing system resources.

Does Dexxer work with macOS Sonoma, Ventura, or older versions?

Dexxer supports all modern versions of macOS, including:

  • macOS Sonoma

  • macOS Ventura

  • macOS Monterey

(Additional compatibility notes will be listed on release pages.)
